James Gunn Confirms Guardians of the Galaxy 3 Starts Filming This Year

While addressing fans online, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 writer/director James Gunn confirms the superhero ensemble film starts filming this year.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will begin filming later this year confirms writer and director James Gunn. The superhero ensemble film will follow two critically and commercially successful predecessors in which MCU fans have become acquainted with the band of mercenaries/found family that is the Guardians of the Galaxy. Vol. 3 has been a long time coming as Marvel’s entire lineup has been shaken up due to the pandemic, but Guardians 3 is now confirmed for a 2023 release date. Behind the scenes, the film was famously disrupted by the fiasco in which Gunn was fired by Disney for off-color tweets from his past. In the short time that he was a free agent, Gunn was hired to write and direct The Suicide Squad, a soft reboot of the 2016 film of the same name.

During quarantine, Gunn has been an exceptionally busy man. The Suicide Squad wrapped filming just before lockdown in February 2020, and in the downtime between that and Vol. 3, Gunn wrote an entire Peacemaker spinoff starring John Cena because he was bored. Peacemaker is currently filming, and as he’s busy working, Gunn often takes to social media to interact with fans. Gunn answers questions about current projects, past films, and even upcoming projects from his colleagues in the industry.

In a recent and rather short tweet, Gunn finally confirmed that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will enter production later this year. Previous reports have indicated that filming will begin in the United Kingdom this year, but the word of god here is key. Asked directly by another Twitter user whether Vol. 3 would start filming in 2021, Gunn responded with a very short and sweet “Yes.” Nothing like getting to the point. Check out Gunn’s one-word Tweet confirmation, below:

Those waiting with bated breath for disaster to strike and delay the MCU lineup further can breathe a little easier. As films slowly but surely enter production and make it through to the editing room, the industry learns more and more how to handle COVID-safe sets and the like. Signs point to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 arriving as planned in 2023. It’s impossible to tell, however, just how much of an effect the shakeup had on the film we’ll eventually see. Dave Bautista, who plays Drax the Destroyer in the films, surmised that the reorganization of the MCU release schedule likely altered Guardians 3‘s script as all the films won’t tie together exactly as they were originally planned.

What fans can be assured of is that Vol. 3 will be chock full of the same spirit that made the first two films smash hits. With Gunn behind the wheel, hilarity, action, and heart are sure to characterize the film. Gunn has formed part of a vanguard that is leading the way to a revival of the industry in the wake of the pandemic. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 entering production is good news for Marvel fans and movie fans alike.
